One of our most important roles on The City Council is our role as the city's fiscal body. We look at the budget, as presented by our mayor, and ensure that it's fiscally responsible, but fiscally responsive to the priorities of our fellow residents.
In order to do that, we need to have you engaged in this process too.
On August 13th, Mayor Hogsett will present his 2019 Budget. From August 13, the Council will hash over this $1.6 Billion budget before passing it at our meeting in October.
That means that the budgets for each department will go before the corresponding City Council Committee for hearing, and Public input. This is your opportunity to hear the proposed budget for a particular department, and share your views on it.
One important thing to remember. A city budget will always follow what our real values are. (not what we say they are.)
If our budget does not reflect what we say our values are, they aren't really our values.
To that end, we need your input. We need the public to help us craft a budget that reflects our values as One City.
In the coming days, I will post the budget as presented to give you, the public, the opportunity to review what Mayor Hogsett presents to the Council. In the days following, each Council Committee will have several opportunities to shape the budget to reflect our priorities. These hearings will be televised live and presented on line and archived for you to watch and review.
Below, please find the hearing schedule for each department. If there is an area of city Government you are interested in and don't see it listed, it could be a sub-department of another. I'll help you find where that budget hearing will take place if you let me know your interest.
